A new leak claims that Illumination’s next Super Mario Bros. movie is a musical and that Mario and Luigi will have Brooklyn accents.
Beyond its recently changed release date and a star-studded cast, there’s not much we know about the Super Mario Bros. movie. It’s not just us being kept in the dark too, as even Luigi’s voice actor Charlie Day previously stated that there is a lot of secrecy surrounding the film.
As reported by GamesBeat member Jeff Grubb, a recent leak revealed the full plot of the Super Mario Bros. movie (which we won’t detail here for fear of spoilers) and gave us some of the first official details about some of its characters. and what we can expect to see from them. Although it’s not known if the leak is real until we see a trailer of some kind, Grubb says it seems believable and could come from test audiences.
Some of the non-spoiler details from the plot reveal include the fact that Mario and Luigi will have Brooklyn accents, despite Chris Pratt previously joking that they wouldn’t, and that the film will have several musical sequences, including some sung by Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach.
Early reactions to the film have indicated that it is animated in a similar fashion to Hotel Transylvania, but with more color. According to this leak, the humor is full of puns and is very meta and self-aware, making references to Mario games throughout. Fortunately, you can’t find “fart jokes” or “dabbing” either. The rest of the details found within the leak basically spoil the entire movie, so we won’t go into them here, but they can be heard in Grubb’s breakdown.
Turns out this plot leak has been floating around the internet for a while now, but has since become more popular after Grubb read it in Grubbsnax and said he thought it was “pretty accurate.”
