2022 NFL Draft Qualifications: Lions trade 20 spots to select Alabama WR Jameson Williams with the No. 12 overall pick - New Style Motorsport

The tide continues for Alabama receivers in the first round of the NFL Draft. This time it’s wide receiver Jameson Williams, who has been selected by the Detroit Lions with the 12th overall pick in the 2022 draft out of Las Vegas. Detroit traded with the Minnesota Vikings from the 32nd overall pick to bring Williams to Motor City.

Throughout the season, Williams, who transferred to Alabama from Ohio State, was considered the top wide receiver prospect in this class of 2022. However, a torn ACL at the National Championship earlier this year made dent in his draft stock, as he was the fourth receiver off the board. That said, not only does his high first-round pick despite the knee injury show how talented Williams is, it also highlights how well he’s progressed in his recovery. As the 2022 draft neared, reports indicated the 21-year-old is early in his rehab, which is an encouraging sign that the Lions will see him on the field sooner rather than later.

Williams was a first-team All-American in 2021 and has all the makings of a true No. 1 receiver in the NFL when healthy. Last season, he had 79 catches for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. That production will now be injected into a Lions offense that ranked 29th in DVOA last season.

With second-year wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, running back D’Andre Swift and tight end TJ Hockenson already in place, the addition of Williams creates a promising stable of offensive weapons for Jared Goff in 2022 and whoever else he wants. the organization may choose as the long-term franchise quarterback in the future.

Grade B

pete prisco: This is the best receiver in the draft. The Lions can wait to get him back. When he is healthy, he will be a dynamic attacking midfielder. They made a bold move to go looking for him, but they gave a lot to catch him. It is better for them to hope that it is what they think it can become. I think he is a star.

exploration report

Classification: 90.63 (all professional)

Professional comparison: jerry jeudy

Strengths: Sleek, fast and slim wideout with dynamic and flexible gameplay. It shifts gears on its route and has top-end off-road speed. Above average spreader due to its ultralight feet. He was often used in the jet/screen sweep game and was usually productive there. All of that is a testament to his dynamic athletic traits. He showed the ability to track the ball away from his frame. He won on the outside and in the slot. Good offline releases. He can be a WR1 eventually, but he should start out as a deep threat that gets some jet-sweeping action.

Weaknesses: From time to time the body catches the ball. It can be outdone at times in the face of press coverage. Just a year of great production.

Recognitions:

  • 2021: Led the SEC in recognition yards (1,572) and recognition TD (15)
  • 2021 – Led the country in 30+ yard touchdowns (11) and 70+ yard touchdowns (four)
